Default How to handle a broken O2 sensor

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport 4.0 and my check engine light keeps going off. I have done all relevant maintenance for the cooling system (i.e flush, water pump and hose replacements) So the only thing left is my O2 sensor in the gas tank. What sort of price am I looking for at the mechanic? I don't feel comfortable doing this myself. Also how long can I drive with this?

O2 sensor in the gas tank? I've not heard of that...

usually you have one O2 sensor on the engine, and you might have a 2nd on the cat depending on model...

The o2 sensor is not in the tank. You have 2 on your exhaust header and 2 after the cat converters. Totaling 4. Best option is to have the codes read for the CEL. Then fix accordingly. Cost for sensor replacement here would be $90 per hour, 1-2 shop hours each?, plus parts $50-$100 each. Time to fix yourself 15-30 minutes each, cost of the parts about 30% less than shop rate.

Is it 4 for the 2000's? I haven't replaced mine yet... on my 1990, there's only one.

My 96 has 2, 1 up stream, 1 downstream. I know 00-01 have 4, 1 for cyl 1-3 up-stream of cat, 1 cyl 1-3 down-stream of cat, 1 for cyl 4-6 up-stream, 1 for 4-6 down-stream. Not sure when they changed it, so can't say about 97,98,99.
