In moderate/low ambient temps wouldn't coolant temps be right at the t-stat temp? If ambient temp is, let's say 40 degrees, why would coolant temp be 210, or is that just what the factory gauge indicates?

I can easily understand 200F at hwy speeds (factory t-stat), that's when there's both max air flow and coolant flow thru the rad.
the ECU coolant sensor(on the t-stat housing) and the gauge coolant sensor (on the back of the head) both read the same

the motor self regulates its temp with the T-stat/fans. so it should always read the same. (id roughly compare it to the way your body regulates temperature)

the time of year and ambient temp shouldnt make a difference in running temps once the motor is warmed up . the 50/50 coolant/water mix does its part in keeping overall temps stable
It does in mine.

Winter time average temp 38*, the coolant temp never goes over 210*. Summer time 90* heat with 80% humidity the coolant temp will rise when in slow traffic/slow wheeling. The e-fan will kick on and cool it back down, as it should.

My point is, why would coolant temp even get to 210 in 38 degree weather even with a 195 t-stat. I fully understand the factory gauge points to 210

There's a ECU coolant sensor display and a gauge coolant sensor display?

there are 2 different sensors. one goes to the computer, one goes to your gauge cluster

Maybe on a '92 but not on a '98.....only one sending unit and it's in the t-stat housing.

My point is, factory temp gauges are rigged to basically point to the middle. The XJ has 3 numbers with 210 in the middle. Most other factory temp gauges have a "C" & "H" and the needle points to the middle. Using a reliable, known accurate aftermarket temp gauge or digital scan tool will show coolant temp up/down yoyo under various driving conditions, speeds, etc., especially in hot weather. We use a ScanGauge and starting this time of year it will run on the t-stat (180F) but in triple digit ambient temps, in traffic, running a/c, we've momentarily seen 230F but the light never flickered as even 230 in within the "normal" range.

Again, I understand that the factory needle points to middle (210) basically year round (if all is normal) but if there was no number in the middle (like most other factory gauges) what would coolant temp be?

thats too cold. cars are designed to run at a specific temp.

Now I get it. I was a bit confused.

My factory gauge will move up and down depending on driving habits. I see what you are talking about with not knowing without a doubt that 210* on the gauge is truly 210* coolant temp. I used the ScanGauge as well and verified my factory gauge is +/- 5* within actual coolant temp. The next line up on the gauge is about 220*, slightly below is 195*.

and as i have said in a previous post, i have verified my temperature a few time throughout the year with my scanner, and my gauge has always been correct.
