Default How I checked new Advance auto fan clutch. Picture. And 2 old ones.

I marked position of slot of spring shaft. (arrows)
Turned clutch, it had pretty good resistanse.
Heated spring by heat gun, used thermometer to make sure it is hot enough. Spring shaft turned about 45 degrees.
Temp was about 230.
I turned clutch again and it was easier to turn than when it was cold!
On top of that when I was turning it there was some noise.
OK, I'll do newspaper test.
I have 99 and 00.
First test: spinning cold fans:
00 I moved about 0.5 distance between blades after I stopped pushing blade.
99 didn't move at all after I stopped pushing blade.
Second:
Tried to stop them by newspaper, engine cold. Couldn't stop.
third:
engines warmed up. Couldn't stop fans.
OK, I am crazy for diagnosing good XJs!!!

Yes, as long as you're not dumb enough to stick your arm in there then you'll be fine.

C'mon, I could change the belt on my old car while it was still running... no ****.

A friend swears by the test of putting his hands in the rotating fans - he says it's a valid test.

Call him - ask for Stubby!

I can see it coming in the very near future.......it will soon be required of all news papers to print a disclaimer on every page "Do not insert this paper, or any other object, into a rotating fan". If u, or anyone u know has, call the law firm of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe...1-800-XXX-XXXX, don't delay.

Next time post a video of the newspaper test.

You might be doing it wrong if the fans didn't stop.

I'd like to see a side by side video comparison myself.

So, if the newspaper test isn't conclusive, do you start using harder and harder materials?
Like maybe cardboard, chopsticks, and then bamboo fencing?

You know, if you shine a timing light at the fan blades, you can stick whatever you're gonna stick in there with better accuracy. The reason is, the timing light flash makes the fan appear to be moving in slow motion.

This reduces the damage incurred to the fan blades.

Ask Refty.

R U ready for happy ending of the story?????? R U?????

Complaint:
1. temperature of my 00 XJ was about 5 degrees higher than 99 everywhere: head, radiator, thermostat housing, input and output rad. hoses, heater houses.
Not sure about rear differential, forgot to check...
2. electrical fan was working sometimes
3. temp of radiator was about 20 degrees higher in the bottom (checked with electrical fan removed)
NOTE: engine was not overheating!

I replaced radiator! Exactly what I was told to do by forum members a few days ago.
that is it! No more working fan, I feel better. I'll sleep well tonight!
Thanks for advises, guys!
Next step is to check radiator in my lawn mower! Wait a minute, it doesn't have a radiator!
