Default How involved is it to rebuild the steering box?

I’ve been contemplating about rebuilding my steering box for a while now, because it’s leaking from the front where the steering box connects to the steering wheel, that bar that I forgot the name of. It also has a lot of internal play, and i’m not sure that a rebuild will fix that internal play.

I don’t mind just buying the box outright or getting a ZJ one to upgrade it, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper to rebuild it than it is to get one either reman or brand new.

So is it too much work to rebuild it vs getting a “new” one? Or is it worth it to rebuild it and learn how to do so?

I rebuilt my Volare box. It was pretty easy, but the last couple steps are fully reassemble, check torque to move the input shaft, take apart again and adjust a crush nut until it is right. After I was done and crushed the nut to lock the adjustment, during that last assemble something got to be not quite aligned right so that it bound up and completely ate it's internal gears. That got sent in as the COR for a rebuilt box.

So I would say it seems easy until you turn it into a boat anchor and have to pay anyway.

Patience. It takes patience. It's a dirty job, but if you take your time, it can turn out well. Youtube is your friend here.
