Default How to make to odometer give the check code?

After I got a check engine light today, I read, saw and did this myself on my 01xj. Hold the odometer button down and turn your key to the on position three times and then let go of the button and leave the key on. Don't start car. My gages went through an extensive looking test and the odo turned into a multi digit countdown and then it returned to the original numbers without showing the code. You Tube vids show their odos giving the check engine code. Anyone know why mine doesn't give the code. The only light on after the test and the return to original number is the check engine light.

I think it only works on the Wranglers, the gauge clusters look the same. Never been able to read the code on my 98, but my 04 Unlimited you can do the 3 on-off trick.

Went back and reread this. Anyway, if no one knows I'll go to the Zone.

Just tried it on my 01 XJ, worked! That would probably freak someone out at the servo when they go to reset the trip.

Default This is my experience

I held the button in when I turned it from the start position to off and it said either 2.3 or 2.4 I can't remember. I have a 98 jeep Cherokee 4.0 4WD not sure what it meant. When I did the turn on 3 times while holding the odometer button it started at 111111 all the way through 000000. Lights lite up that I don't even have, I don't have cruise but a light lite for it. My check engine light isn't on. But now I have noticed when it's turned to the on position I hear a clicking noice like if I was pushing a button to pop the hatch but I don't have that option. It's clicking in the hatch and I'm not sure what it it.

When the button turn 5.4 or 5.5 to blue I forget now. His was a 86 Commando 4.0 RHD. It was 7 times while pressing the seat belt release and singing do re me all the way through la te do. Street lights turn off, then on to Eddie and Cruisers. The ABS self scan check out lite is a light that lights up to be a lite light. When it's turned off (that's what she said) there is a vibrating option which is a free upgrade. birds will hatch in the rear.

There's a post from 1997 that covers this better. We should did that up too.

Another necro-thread.

The key click tells you ODB1 codes. Get a proper scanner. You don't need a fancy one, just something that reports and resets codes.

Here's the procedure and list
