You can pull the cap off and check in it. It's proll dry by now though. Take the cap off and put a light bead of marine grease around the base of the cap where it seats against the distributor. Also, put a little at each end of each plug wire. You can buy "electric" grease, but I have found that they both keep water out, just my $.02 worth. HTH!!

I have always used dielectric grease on both ends of the spark plug wire (on the cap and the plug itself) and made sure the cap had a good seal on the distributor

And how can I make this never happen again?

I mean, like how can I fix this problem with the distributor bap, since that's what ya'll think it is?

Mudd you should check to see if you can get that cap loose. RTV sets up it makes a pretty strong gasket. That is why COS suggested grease instead of RTV.

That's what i feared when i first did it and my buddy told me to try to take his off since he did it too. I unscrewed the two screws and popped it off. You can't lift it straight up but have to tilt it and it rips off. The key to using it is to put the rtv on the bottom of the cap, a good sized 1/8" bead and let it semi-dry before you install it. Might be a little bit more difficult to remove but it's not removed that often enough to be a hassle. Plus it keeps the water out so there shouldn't be any issue with it for a couple years. I used to have to pop that thing off every time i did deep water crossing in the tj, or just minor splashes. Since i used rtv on it, it has been trouble free. You gotta plug or re-route the breather hole on top of the dist. cap. Water gets in there.

I put a little shield around my distributor - i would get the same thing from splash up - also built up a shield up front to keep to much water from hitting the serpentine belt keeping it from hydro planning...

ill dig up a pic - i actually stole the setup from a 1990 dodge shadow - the dist. is on is in the front of the car and they have a shield to protect it from getting water through the front cowl directly on to it..
