I need to change my vote.
168,000+ miles.
I think I caught it early enough. No noticeable amount of coolant in the oil but a lifter was being washed out and collapsing, would tick bad for a second or two on first starts at times.
Put on a new head, everything seems to be fine as of right now.

I picked a 2000 Cherokee Sport with 198000 on the clock and a bad auto tranny, I'm on the process of making it drivable again, already convert it to manual (I don't like autos) specially in my country with too many hills, the jeep is already starting and moving front and back, checked the head just to be sure and still looks fine!
will be on top of the cooling system to prevent the cracking.

I don't have an XJ, but I had about 100,000 miles on my 01 TJ when the head cracked. Unfortunately, I didn't figure out the problem until it had 123,000 miles. I ended up having to rebuild the entire motor, so I had it bored and stroked and used a new head from Alabama Cylinder Head.

2001 xj. 3 years ago a friend told me it smelled like ol blue was running hot. My car guy wanted to replace the thermostat and serpentine belt and so it was. That was at about 60k miles. I'm at 75k now with a new everyday car. My blue xj is the most awesome muddafudda machine to drive. Would you say I'm at the coolant checking every start point (lots of winter driving in StL)? nevermind... now I'm all scared about this 0331 thing so I found something new to obsess about. ha

When you guys say "overheat" are you talking pegging the gauge at 260? My will creep up to 215ish when it’s 90+ and the a/c blasting in traffic. 01 XJ with 126k. Oil is on way to Blackstone now. No coolant loss, oil looks fine. Hope I don't have to change my vote!

Broken Crankshaft!
I'm very sorry to say I'm now an owner of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2WD wagon that has a cracked camshaft. See pic below:
You can see the crack below the rear main bearing seal. I'm not sure how this happened. Very disappointed, I really liked my jeep. Unfortunately, I don't have the confidence, knowledge to rebuild.
Would be curious as to how this happened.
