Didn't think of trying that. I have one, will test it tomorrow after the rain stops.

Default Cracked

2000 XJ head cracked at 173k, and some change. No coolant in the oil. When I took the head to the head shop, the mechanic said it was a very minor crack. Had him fix it and go through the rest of the head. Got it back on now. Actually runs better than it did before it cracked!!

ok did the combustion test, fluid stayed blue for longer than test required. But with engine warm decided to run pressure test again. Leaking out head gasket between 4 and 5 on passenger side. Now with no combustion gas in cooling system, do I take the chance of just leaking head gasket, or just change it out completely? I found an aluminum one made by American cylinder head for 454.00 complete with valves.

If your already going to be down there, I woukd like the peace of mind knowing i don't have a time bomb in still. I would get a clearwater head though.

The casting number refers to the configuration of the ports. The Clearwater head is a 0331, but it has a thicker deck to prevent the crack that the original casting was prone to.

My 2000 XJ heads were just fine at around 300K. The engine also ran great with decent oil psi. But At that time i dumped a Chrysler crate engine in it only because of a mysterious engine tick. Best i can figure, it was a wrist pin but that tick drove me crazy.

The XJ didnt get the 0331 until 2000. The 99 still used the 0630.

Distributor = 0630
Coil packs = 0331

I believe the WJ had the 0331 in 99, but not the XJ. If your XJ do have the 0331, theyre transplants. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
