Default how to remove fuse clip

95 xj, 4.0 L, auto trans. Fuse #5 clips are sprung so far apart fuse does not make contact. See photo. I have a salvage block with good clips.
Can't figure out how to get old clips out. Please help.

If I'm not mistaken you need to remove the fuse block from the firewall and then split it open to service the "clip" your talking about. It should insert from the back side - this keeps it from pulling through.

What you could do to get you by is use something conductive to make up the space so your fuse fits and makes contact. Thin strip of tinfoil, creativity is key, your fuse block looks mangled soo whatever works.

You should be able to gently bend the contacts back closer together. Like ThatJeepGuy said "creativity is key".

There is no easy way to bend the contacts. Once they're corroded, they tend to break. I wouldn't bother cannibalizing an old fuse panel when brand new terminals are dirt cheap. https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1142103 has some info, including part numbers for the replacement terminals. Most are single terminals, but some are connected in a row of 3 or 4. When you pull the fuse box, you should also clean all the goo out of the bulkhead connector and re-lube with dielectric grease.

This is a picture of the single and 4-gang terminals, you can see the small tabs you need to push from the front side with a small pick or screwdriver, then it'll slide out the back. Mine were bad enough just pushing in the middle with moderate force would push them out the back. Take pictures of the wires before you start pulling. Have a soldering iron and some extra wire in case any rot extends up into the wire.

Please disconnect the battery negative cable when working on that fusebox.

We don't wanna see a new thread on "I need a new wiring harness".

Never had a problem making the contacts a little snugger but never had to work with a fuse panel in such a condition. I take the point about corroded contacts breaking, but I was thinking of distorted ones.

Never knew about replacement terminals but I suspect that's probably an "only in America" thing.

The area circled in red looks pretty sketchy. Make sure the wiring behind is OK. You may want to change those terminals while you're in there.

I sometimes underestimate the experience of skill level of others. Sometimes that's good, sometimes bad. :}

I know I always assumed everyone else's was greater/higher than mine (after all, why else would I be trawling thru a tech queries forum?) - or,at least, I did but I guess Cruiser (& the other Mods) see things from a different perspective.

Simply that you've seen/heard it all before & tend to alert folk to the errors, & their consequences, that others have made before, whereas us mere mortals are more inclined to assume everyone knows what they're doing.
