How to remove transmission pan ?
#16
The screen looked perfect, no color, no parts. You will never know unless you look at, it took five minutes to replace. The instructions said to torque the pan bolts to 120 inch pounds, but that did cause the gasket to squeeze out more then it should have. I would say it was too tight. The miles showing were 105,000. The transfer oil was very dirty, glad that I changed it at the same time.

Good Job! Mine looked like mud after 250K+ I don't think it had never been changed. Shifted better immediately. ~8 months later changed fluid again and new solenoids. I totally forgot to pickup a drain plug. IMHO the drain plug is at the wrong end. Yes, I know the deep end is "less protected". The next time I plan to add another drain plug. When you drop that pan and another ~3 quarts or so is there the first time it's sort of "surprising".

I tried for a good hour trying to pull it off. Was able to take the bracket off the starter and pull it down. Love the fuel line and clamps though. Will do that next time!

Ok, so even this caveman has gotten the "hint" that you don't need to drop the pan or change the filter (screen) .
Is there any situation where it would be advisable to clean the pan? I'm all for the easiest way is the best way.!!

Just got done doing this yesterday. Mine dipstick wouldn't come out of that tube for nothing, even tried pounding on it from the top with the pan bolts out hoping it would drop out. In the end I cut it with a grinder and welded it back together. The hose & clamp idea is probably easier lol
Also, my screen was clean with 202k miles on it. Someone must have changed it before though because the pan had silicone instead of a gasket.

Just went thru all this myself with my '94 XJ. As others have mentioned I just decided to cut thru the dipstick tube and when I was done put a piece of rubber tubing with hose clamps in to connect it back together.
The only problem came when I left my brother to cut thru the dipstick tube and as I was driving to the parts store for a filter and gasket I called and asked if he remembered to take the dipstick out before he started cutting. He said, "Of course I did! I'm not stupid!" So I get back and he's sawing away and saying how hard it is and I notice the OIL dipstick laying across the top of the engine!
