Default How to test 4WD when buying Cherokee XJ

Dear Members,
I'm new to Jeep things and even 4x4. I'm going to buy Jeep Cherokee XJ 2001. Kindly check the following points and help me.

1) To check that if 4WD is working, I have put the car to N and switched it to 4H. The part time light didn't appear on dash.
2) I then switched it to 4L, the car moved a meter and stopped and 4WD got stuck. I switched the car back to 2WD and tried to drove it as normal without 4WD but it got stuck.

Can you please advise on above with both issues separately.

Cheers,
Ammar

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

And how would you engage 4H/4L if you are stopped and stuck?
Thanks

If you have an NP231 it will usually go right in to 4x4, if you have an NP242 you may have to rock it back and forth a bit to get it to engage, that's one of the reasons I swapped a NP231 in mine.

My NP241 Transfer case is now 23 years old and to shift it from 4 high into 4 low or from 4 low back to 4 high: I have to be dead stopped, place the shifter in Neutral, then move the transfer case lever from 4WD to 4WD LOW, If it grinds when you move the transfer case lever, leave it in 4 high and move the shifter into reverse, then back to neutral and try the lever again. If you have traditional 4WD, do not engage 4WD and drive it on the pavement ( for testing on pavement, go only in a straight line for a short distance). Cleaning the linkage and spraying silicone lube on the joints in good Maintenace that will ease the operation of your transfer case.

How do I know what transfer case I have?
92 XJ
Thanks
Also, book says I have 20 gal fuel capacity, but when I light comes on I can pump only about 15 gal and the light should give me 2-gallon warning.
Do I actually have 5 gal left when the light comes on?

It's stamped on a tag on the back side - or you can look up which one is on your '92 (google works)

Odd, but mine did the same till I replaced the vent/regulator/fuel pump/filter screen assembly . After replacement I could put 20 gal in -

If it has 2wd, 4x4 hi, N , 4x4 lo = NP231. If it has 2wd, 4x4 part time, 4x4 fulltime, N, 4x4 lo = NP242. Yes you have a 20 gallon tank and having 5-6 gallons left when it gets close to E and the light comes on is normal.

P.S. When my tank is full, the gauge barely reads over 1/2 full.

CRUISER'S MOSTLY RENIX TIPS

IMPROVING THE FUEL PUMP GROUND

JANUARY 3, 2016 CRUISER54 54 COMMENTSThe fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit ground at a sheet metal screw up behind the spare tire on an XJ, and behind the driver’s taillamp on an MJ.

Not only is a sheet metal screw a lousy way to ground things, this ground path is long and travels through some connectors that are prone to corrosion and moisture.

Locate the black wire on the HARNESS side of the fuel pump/sender 3 wire connector. Remove a 6″ length of the split loom covering. Strip back about 1/2″ of insulation from the BLACK wire.

Take your new ground wire, preferably at least 14 gauge and 12 to 18 inches long as needed, strip it about 3/4″, and wrap it around the exposed part of the harness plug wire.Solder the connection. Tape it up and reinstall the split loom covering.

At the other end of your new ground wire, add a crimp on eyelet. Attach the eyelet under a bolt that goes directly into the chassis. Be sure to clean the attaching point til shiny and apply OxGard to the contact surfaces.

This could be caused by a multitude of things, but for me, there was gasoline in the float causing it to read less than norma. In my case the highest reading was about 3/8

The fuel guage sending unit is in the same assembly as the vent/regulator/fuel pump/filter screen assembly, When my fuel guage read empty and I can only get 15 gal in, I replaced the unit

BTW, on my 99 XJ, the warning light comes on when the gage only reads 1/8 of a tank - or a little more than 2 gal. left
