How widespread is the '00-'01 head problem?

Default How widespread is the '00-'01 head problem?

I've been looking at a lot of XJ's and trying to find a '98-'99 without a ton of miles is proving tough. I'm finding a fewer newer ones, but am scared of the cracked head issue. The fact that I've found a couple with cracked heads hasn't eased my mind any... lol

Is there any way to tell whether or not the Jeeps I'm looking at have the problem head or do all of these years have this problem and it's only a matter of time?

All 00-01s have the factory 0331 head which is prone to cracking between cylinders 3 and 4. But not buying one because of this reason is dumb, buy one, and keep an eye on the coolant and oil. Even if it cracks you can upgrade it for around 400 bucks. If you have the option, buy a 99, they were the best year imo. I have an 01 and love it, but don't let it discourage you from getting one.
