From a wear standpoint, yes they are harder on hubs and ball joints, just like rims with less backspacing. Really nothing to worry about, but yes they are a little harder on them simply due to physics.
From a failure standpoint, people will get crazy. Are they another potential point of failure? I guess... Technically. Are they prone to failure? I would say no, a properly installed and properly torqued high quality bolt on spacer is NOT prone to failure when maintained to manufacturers specifications. But you better own a torque wrench, and have the patience and ability to install them correctly, and check them at every tire rotation. Do not use slip on spacers or any suspect cheapo crap. I love mine, how they look, and how they have improved the handling and stability of my Jeep.

31s on a jeep cherokee with a three inch lift will rub when flexing, my has a 4 inch lift and back wheel rub on the rear at certain flexes gas mileage kinda dropped it doesent like the tire ratio to the gear dissent like to down shift so therefore it's cutting down on gas

Let me see if I can adderss some of these questions. For the proper tire vs.gear size and rpm at different mph search on this forum there is a form you fill in and it tells you the information needed for gearing. Like for a 31" would be a 4.10 and my 33"'s a 4.56 and so on it tells you also what speedometer gear is needed for that.
Wheel spacers IMHO a very last resort because of poor wheel choice. Good inexpensive steel wheels can be bought many places. My son's and mine have came from Summit and Jegs, his were knock offs of my Cragar Soft Eights that came from Jeg's, and my Cragar's from Quadratec on a price match from Summit. I always try to price match with dealers I like to use so I can establish myself with them for repeat sales, it does make a difference, I found this out years ago.
When I bought my XJ it had a 3" lift on it, if you want to call it that. It had spacers on the front and blocks with shackles on the rear and broken/bent shocks on but did have a new Track Bar. Here is a photo a few days after I brought it home on 31" old tires I had laying around on the new wheels the others junk. It looks higher than it is because of the drop between drive and concrete to shop.
Here is after I tore all the old stuff out and installed a new Rustys Off Road 3" Full Spring Pack Lift Kit everything needed for the lift including the hardware. The springs are very good front and rear and I'm using them next for a upgrade to 4 1/2" lift.
Here is my XJ with just the Rustys 3" lift Kit on it nothing else with 33x12:50x15"'s. Fender trimming is needed really with most tires if you have very much flex.
