champions?! those things are good for lawnmowers. I actually stopped using cheap plugs 8 years ago. for the past 8 years I've been using bosch platinum 2's,but they apparently are phasing those out. you can still find them at Walmart. I found using plugs like that to be better, pricey but better. im probably gonna start using the new eco plugs soon. still have a few months before I summer-ize my girl. since I put them in my fuel economy went up quite a bit, plus I now use moble 0 weight oil. my 4.0 started with 16 city miles and went up to around 20. big difference. if your in a colder region.you may not want 0 weight. by all means im not telling anyone what to do,just giving an alterative suggestion. with wacky gas prices, its always good to save money. whatever you do DO NOT use autolites. they make everything run like crap, even mowers.
- Champions are spec'd by the factory, have proven themselves with numerous enthusiasts over countless years, and are not just "for lawnmowers." How does someone even form an opinion like this; I've seen this stupid "for lawnmowers" remark many times and still can't get over how dumb it is. And can't figure-out where it started. Now I think it stays alive because people read it and adopt it as their own opinion without knowing any better.
- Platinum 2? You mean the dual electrode plug? That doesn't do anything but make the plug last longer by giving the spark two "choices" to jump to and smother/crowd flame kernel generation with an unnecessary electrode. Nothing but a potential performance downgrade to increase the life of an already long-lived plug for lazy people.
- Platinum at all? Fine, but you do know that platinum is far less conductive than copper and even less conductive than iridium while also being a "hot" plug? Often, especially if not gapped right, stock ignition systems struggle to produce a decent, reliable spark through platinum. A hot plug can lead to nasty [pre]detonation problems. Like I said, platinum is fine, but you slapping it *****-nilly into a stock system isn't a great idea.
- If someone is in a cold region, that would be all the MORE reason to want a 0w30 or 0w40 oil.
- I use Autolites (iridium with a 0.050" gap powered by an MSD coil through Magnecore wires to be precise), and I assure you that my 4.0 does not run like crap. Kolak (Nick Ianuzzi) has also been selling Autolites as part of his ignition kit for a long time, and his reputation speaks for itself.
If you're using platinum 2, why on earth are you changing them twice a year (you said this earlier in this thread)??? Platinum alone lasts quite a long time (60k to 100k miles), but with that 2nd electrode nonsense, they'd last even longer.
