I very much did not appreciate doing the alternator on my '09 Chrysler 300. Took much of the day and a lot of moved stuff. Would have been better with a lift and my full set of tools instead of my road trip kit.

But I think most of my dislike of that job was just residual from the fact that it quite charging around JohnR and McNichols. There is probably somewhere worse in the US to break down, but I sure don't know of a worse place.

I wonder what year the OP's XJ is. On the Renix era XJs, you just unbolt and wiggle it out through the bottom. No biggie at all.

My GTI is like this. Fortunately I've taken it apart so many times I could move the engine around as needed in my sleep, but it's nice having lots of room (relatively speaking) to work on things in the Cherokee.

Removal from top is blocked by A/C lines.
Not one video addresses this.

Removal from bottom is blocked by frame rail.

Alternator is so close to the ground that you can’t see behind it
Without a lift.

Easily the most convoluted car I have ever tried to work on.
Easier to rebuild a v12 Jag engine than do a basic repair on these insane American cars.
It really is about a 30 minute job at best. Like it was said above, take a break and come back to it with fresh eyes. It removes best from the bottom after removing the topside bolt and nut (and loosening the belt, of course), and disconnecting the wiring from above. I did also remove the battery and battery tray for ease of access.
