I hope it's my torque converter
Hey guys I have a 97 cherokee 4.0 4X4 auto trans. I ran into a HUGE problem today. I was driving the truck and it seemed ok when I got stuck in traffic. As the traffic moved I let off the brake and gave it gas and realized the truck wasn't moving at all and was just revving. I pushed it to the side of the road and shut it down and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I than started it back up, put it in drive and VOILA! It started moving but as I drove it, it began happening again and after about 1 minute of driving again came to the point where it would just rev without moving. Everytime I shut it off and let it sit and than start it up again it will drive for about a minute and during that time even if I hold the RPM's steady at one spot the vehicle will gradually slow down until once again it's just revving and I'm not moving. I tried running it through the gears, shifting the transfer case to 4HI and 4LO and nothing worked. I checked the trans fluid and transfer case fluid and both are full. I'm a college student so money is a HUGE issue. Any input on what you guys think it could be would be GREATLY appreciated.

any CELs? Is your fluid burnt?
Sounds almost like youre losing pressure, like maybe a bad pump.
What I would do is drop the pan, and change the filter. Refill with cheap DEXIII. See if that fixes your problem. If not, I would start looking at the TC/Pump.

I was just in a situation similar to this with my 5.9 Here is something i just had beat into my head..
anytime you replace/rebuild a Transmission, you ALWAYS replace the torque converter and ANY coolers at the same time.. Aka your radiator. or you can bypass the radiator to a brand new external cooler
AND anytime you replace the Torque converter, you replace the Transmission too! What i learned is, you never look at them as separate peices, they work hand in hand.. If one goes, the other is done aswell.. simply due to metal shavings.. you will never EVER get the shavings out.. no matter what you do!

^^^ I definitely agree....so does it sound like my problem is transmission/torque converter related? Because I don't want to spend the money and time replacing them to find out it was something else like a transfer case.

I found a trans and torque converter together for a great price but it's out of a 1994 Cherokee 4X4 4.0....will this work with mine? I'd really appreciate a fast accurate response because I would like to jump on this deal. Please!!
