im probably buying it for 4200, i said ill buy it for that if there's no rust underneath, so just waiting to hear back. im not letting this go for a few hundred bucks, also it has studded winter tires on it and that is a big seller for me up here in canada. this is the nicest, cleanest xj that i have seen for sale from looking for the past 5 months and it's real close by. not letting this go.

Yeah, if it's really "ZERO rust", it's a good deal at $4200.

Get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope and just listen to the engine at various places. Listen to the water pump, alternator, anything you can think of. You'll be amazed at what you can hear, and it might save you buying a clunker.

Do all the usual fluid checks, stick your nose on all of it. You are looking for a burnt smell. Make sure you manually run through all the gears, and try out 4WD, both low and high.

If you're comfortable with the price then go for it. Now be prepared to hear from the "I got mine for 53 cents with less mileage " crowd.

I'm pretty positive I overpaid and have spent the last 6 months discovering nuisance stuff and rust underneath that had been sprayed over (not very knowledgable at shopping stage so my MO was learning just enough and being willing to roll around underneath and get dirty looking at them just to appear dangerous enough haha).

That said, you might consider how much TIME you can/are willing to devote and whether you plan to do your own work on it or, if you're willing to learn if you don't do mechanic work. That helps take the "money pit" fear out of the process in the event you buy it and it offers unpleasant surprises. I know it's sappy, but I have never questioned my purchase despite having paid a lot but done tons of stuff to rehab it. [warning, sappy part...] Mine has become very much a hobby and, despite frustration at times, has become quite a pleasant personal journey and a source of great satisfaction (thanks to CF haha).

That was my worthless .02. If you can afford to spend that, it's probably worth saving yourself the frustration of an extended search. BUT...maybe seller would let you have someone check it over for major probs first if you offered him a small deposit?) When I asked some sellers if "my mechanic" could check it out first, that sometimes caused seller to "remember" issues or problems or get really shaky on asking price haha

Unless you enjoy a "personal journey" to the ATM to extract hard earned cash, it's never acceptable to overspend on a vehicle as common as an XJ. Go over there with cash in hand and NEGOTIATE!!! And if you don't know how to look the vehicle over to verify condition you should bring someone with you who can do that for you.

Definitely bring it to a mechanic and have it checked out before the sale. Offer to pay the $100 (or whatever it comes out to) diagnostic if he'll bring it to the shop. You could probably pick up a Cherokee for 2k and put 2.2k into it and have a better Jeep, unless that one really is perfect.

I got my 98 for 5k and it was spotless rust free and had under 100k on it with a stack of maintenance records. Worth it if you ask me. Op don't be afraid to throw down the cash if it's what you want. Usually these threads are people saying if you spend over $500 on a cherokee you spent to much. So even if you posted up saying it was 2k people would still be like no man that's way too much, offer him 1k. No joke.

He plainly wheels it. He didn't lift it and put those big studly tires on it for his wife or girlfriend to use it mall crawling on Black Friday.

Best and safest way to do this is to go with no money. Take a companion with you, preferably a guy. Negotiate the deal if you want to buy it. Then he and you can drive to your bank and complete the transaction there with money, title, bill of sale, and witnesses.

Banks have notary publics there if your state requires it.
