Albert Einstein's definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results".....multiple flushings hasn't/won't cure the overheat. Once u have replaced the other half of the cooling system, I'll bet problem solved. Git 'er done.
Basically an old radiator, fan clutch and cap/bottle is what's left with regard to having a new cooling system. U do need to run a t-stat so when replacing the rad and fan clutch, put a new stat in. If u luv your XJ, don't prolong cooling system neglect.

There's a clue.
There's another clue....new water pump and no t-stat but still overheating.
Another good clue.....coolant will boil at 212 if the cap (either kind) will not hold pressure in the system.

I would think a seized compressor/clutch would make a horrendous noise from the belt frying seconds before the belt is completely thrown off.......thus no power steering, alternator, etc.

I always do what 5-90 does and drill two 1/16th? size holes in the t-stat, 12 o'clock, 6'oclock, mount it like that, and its supposed to auto-purge itself if what I hear is true. Seemed to work perfect for me, no problems in quite a long time running like that.

I have never burped a Renix Jeep in my life and never had a problem. That said, I think drilling the holes in the stat, or using the factory 83501426 stat with the "jiggle valve" accomplishes the same thing as burping. The factory stat also maintains temp better in both summer and winter here in the mountains of Arizona where it can be 0* to 100*.
I also only use the Napa 703-1396 bottle cap as most of the standard replacements are chinese junk. That's refundant, huh? chinese junk?
