i would not buy a junkyard engine unless you can heard it run... i also would not buy a motor unless it still has oil in it The oil can give you a good history and condition of a motor... the grand cherokee motor you have to change all the sensor... and some wiring...
How much are they asking?

I'd suggest trying to get an engine in as new an XJ as you can use that looks like it was well maintained but was in a wreck and was written off by an insurance company as totaled. (i.e. cost more to fix than it's worth). If you see an XJ in a junkyard with no real damage you have to assume that something serious mechanical put it there. I saw 2 clean looking 98-99 XJ's in a local yard that had been broad-sided and rear ended and had the GEICO stickers on the windshields so those are the types I'd feel safest grabbing the engines out of. BUT still look them over as far as fluid condition, plugs etc.

yea it is kinda sketchy buying an engine u cant hear run. Theres at least a hundred engines in this one room. dude just walked me through and kept pointing out the 4.0s. "theres one, theres one..."
Aggg im not sure what to do.
mines not even in that bad of shape it runs greats it just has a bad knock sometime, worse when its above 50 out side, ive had it looked at by a few ppl and theyall agree is probably a wrist pin. id love to just rebuild this one but i cant live with out it for a few weeks while i do the work.
thanks for the helps guys.
keep the info flowing if u got it, ill take as much as u want to offer.

Besides the salvage yard, don't ignore sources such as craigslist, etc.
Sometimes a sweet deal can be found........
Salvage yard engines are indeed a crap shoot. I have installed many, and only been burned once though. I didn't mind the risk though, as the engine was guaranteed for replacement and I could do a swap pretty quickly. It is riskier when you are paying for labor.
For sure, inspect all six spark plugs if you are buying one that you can't hear run. Inspection of plugs can tell you a LOT about how that engine was burning....
