In all seriousness, if you're looking for a tow rig that you want to be up to the job AND haul the family around in, why not look at a diesel? Decent mileage, great reliability (at least with cummins in my experience), and can def pull and tow.

Now, I was considering purchasing an m1a1 as a simple theft deterrent slash weekend cruiser, but I am concerned with my XJ's ability to haul it, as the tank is located somewhere in Mexico, it will be a substantial trip back to Vermont. I have an AAL and a B&M tranny cooler, so I'm not worried about it sagging too much or overheating, but my hitch is my primary concern. Is a class II hitch acceptable for hauling this weight? Any advice on how many miles ahead I should apply the breaks when coming to a stop light? Many thanks. Ok, that was fun! And remember- just kidding

Many pickups have 4 seats, especially with the crew cab. Pretty much any full-sized SUV will seat 5-9 depending. Millions of people use these as family vehicles every day.

Did you try your towing with your buddy's Jeep in bad weather, bad traffic, and steep hills? Having to maneuver in emergency situations/emergency stopping? Probably not. I have a 22' deck boat, and it makes my Expedition look small when it is behind the truck. I would not want to tow it any distance with anything smaller.

It's not your mistake putting it in this forum. As you can see, you did get people's thoughts on this. You got what you wanted.

Some of the answers may not be to your liking. That's what you get when you get on a forum.

Sounds to me that your mind was pretty well made up to get a Grand before you ever posted.

Expensive fuel, not every station carries diesel, expensive parts and labor, more expensive to buy new or used, can be noisy and smelly.

I would have to say that "YES" my mind is made up on the Grand Cherokee, my buddy and I and two other people in the car would tow it every weekend from 2 miles to 40. NO problems at all with the wheelbase, stopping, and pulling. It convinced me to get one. He had a 02 unlimited also.

So its really up to the fact of the HIGH mileage on this one. It ran great, would never know it had that mileage. But the ??? is will the engine last anther 100k if maintained properly??

"will the engine last anther 100k if maintained properly??"

Who knows? Previous maintenance or lack thereof counts for a lot.

Even proper maintenance will not keep something from eventually wearing out.

Good luck.
