Default I Smell a Rat, My Jeep Stinks

1990 xj. it has an odor now, smells of dead rat, not super strong unless it has been closed up in the sun, then you really notice it. I turned on the vent blower and that smells fine. it is hard to track down. looked and smelt under seats, under dash, no signs of any critter, but the smell is unmistakable. Nothing in the engine bay either.

Maybe a critter got in during last camping trip and died in there while parked for last two months? or a critter got in and dead while parked, but the jeep was all closed up when parked.

So where have you found critters to nest, hide, enter the jeep? I hope some past experience from you might guide me where to look for a corpse. I have looked and looked for two days, running slim on ideas now.

Thank You!!!!!!!

Rear quarter panels above the wheel wells.
There are holes in the frame they can squeeze through.

Look behind the trim panels??

Ha Ha. I had that same thing happen to me. One got in and was sitting on the passenger headrest watching me drive. Reached over to smack him and didn't kill him. He crawled into the heater and died there. Next time I will hit harder

Up in the dash on top of the glove box, ducting, or cluster. Inside a seat. Up in the headliner.

You can either do a Canada border crossing search, or you can wait for the smell to air out. As Mike said, this is not a time for half measures.

From under the passenger dash, look up into the checkered looking vent.
The little buggers seem to get killed by the blower motor.
Blower motor R&R to remove carnage.
Afterwards, with blower motor on high, mist a weak bleach solution into the passenger side cowl vent.

Just spent three days wheeling/camping. the smell went away. I even slept in the jeep, didnt notice smell anymore. I suspect the dead critter must have been up in the undercarraige and fell out on the trip. It still stank the night before we left on the trip.
Good wheeling. however one of the trails we had a lot of fun one a year ago was ruined, it was graded, ugh! it has some great rock crawling, now all ruined, you can drive a prius on it now.
But the second trail became more difficult this time, buddy even got some underside damage, me, just a scrapes on some armour.

fun fun, and no more dead rat stink! So I assume the source of stink fell out.
