Removing the driveshafts is something easy enough you could have kids in grade school do it if they wouldn't drop them on themselves. lol

I pulled the ax15 in my 90 twice in the first year or so I owned it. the transmission and xfer case is a lot lighter than you think, it's mostly aluminum. I eased it down onto my chest, and then wriggled out from underneath. then you can literally lift it onto a bench by yourself.

I opted for just replacing the stock internal slave with a Timken unit, and, most importantly, changing the master, main line and fluid at the same time. you have to make absolutely sure that the fluid is completely free of contaminants, and imo change the fluid completely every two or three years to make sure water stays out of the system.

good luck.

Not that difficult. Just be sure to have an extra set of hands to help drop/reinstall it. I was able to pull my ax-15 with out having to disconnect the trans case. Used a floor jack to slide in and out. Just be sure to jack the jeep up unless you got a decent size lift on it already. Also make sure you have 3-4 ft of extensions to get at those top bolts. Seriously you will need some long extensions to get back up in there lol.

IDK if they did it in 91 but if you pull this yourself the top two bolts are 8point or external torx. You'll play &*%* if you don't have the right socket.

Sounds like I should give it a try. I have a good friend who is a good mechanic. I have a 4 post lift in my garage. He wants me to rent a transmission jack. What is the best source for the Timkin internal slave and clutch master? Thanks for all your help. Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Would a swivel E-12 Torx socket be helpful?

Autozone to rent the tranny jack, if they have them.

Rockauto has good prices but the shipping is kind of expensive. Advanced Auto Parts state they have a price match guarantee though I have never tried using it. I know right now they have free shipping and a discount and gift card if order is over $50 or $75. Of course you have Orileys or Autozone as well. Just be sure to get one that has gotten high reviews, last thing you want to do is have to redo this due to a crap part that saved you a few bucks.

Oh, if one of your gauges stop working after the transmission job, check the top back of the motor for an unplugged sensor. When the transmission pulls back on the motor it disconnects a gauge, can't remember which one it is, think its the water temp one. Anyways, its a small white electrical plug, might want to disconnect it before pulling it to prevent it from accidentally breaking. Just look at the top back of the motor, closest to the firewall, you will see it, just unplug it and then plug it back in when you are done. Other than that, its a pretty simple job. Best of luck to ya!
