Default I want to install a REAR WIPER. A few Questions...

In a rear-wiper delete vehicle, Is there already wiring in the rear liftgate to power a windshield wiper motor or would I need to be running new, additional wiring to the liftgate?

Could I wire to the existing control switch on the steering column so that the rear wiper just comes on when the front are turned on or must I install a new switch on the stalk that will run each separately?

And in locating a rear wiper motor would I need a year-specific unit or would pretty much any rear wiper motor and arm work from any make vehicle that has a 180 degree sweep?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure right now about the wiring. But the sweep isn’t 180 degrees, at least on my 96. More like 120 or 135 degrees, without actually measuring it. Kinda wish it would go farther, but then it would run into the lower window trim.

Don't know about the harness. The parts guide does show a different part number for the harness for 87-89 vs 90. Don't know why they are different.

Does yours have the defogger?

It also shows different part numbers for the wiper motor. All of the others parts show the same number (arm, blade, grommets. etc.)

On a stock install with rear wiper, there is a different tank that has 2 pumps (one front, one rear), and the rear wash/wiper switch is on the dash. So there may be the connector for the dash switch already there.

The motor protrudes through a hole in the liftgate. Do you have one there already or will you need to drill one out?

You should pull the panel off and have a look.

The wiring for the wiper motor and the wiring for the switches was already there on my 91 two door. The swaps were easy.
The rear wiper "delete" plug in the hatch is rubber and easily removed.
When raiding the rear wiper motor and arm from the wrecking yards be sure to grab the plastic piece that covers the snout. Might as well grab the switches too while you're there.
The rear windows are rubber mounted. Save the seal from the donor vehicle in case it's in better shape than the one you have.

No, no defogger. Would rarely have to use one where I live. Except, of course, last week when one would have been handy...

Yes, there's already a hole for the rear wiper closed with a little rubber plug.

I was at the Pick-Your-Part yard this afternoon and even the '92 they have on the lot didn't have a rear wiper. Looks like I'm in for around $90 for a new one.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks, man. Like i just told someone else who responded, I was at the Pick-Your-Part yard this afternoon and even the '92 they have on the lot didn't have a rear wiper. Looks like I'm in for around $90 for a new one. But, truth is, I've got more pressing stuff to spend my $ on for the XJ. Like new shocks all around.
