There is a self check and I believe it works on the base gauge cluster as well. If you hold down the trip odometer button and at then turn start the vehicle then release the button it does a full check of all the lights and gauges. You may only have to turn it to the on/run position I can't remember as it's been quite a while since I tried it. I have the full cluster, but believe it works on both. Hope that helps.

At least you would see the location of all the lights as it checks them all.

I believe everything should light up if you turn the key to "on" prior to "start".

Either way, you should seriously look into doing a cluster swap for a full gauge set. It's super easy on the 97+ gauges and the mileage is stored in the PCM/Computer so you don't have to deal with the dial odometers that we have on the pre-97's.

yeah Pat, I think it does...but there is a way to make it do a "sweep" of everything differently than just turning it on. I'll try it tonight again. I've been riding my motorcycle for a while now (taking advantage of good weather here)...so gotta give the XJ some love again.

It's similar to what a lot of new cars do today when you fire them up.

and X2 on the swap... I did that with mine... took me less than 10 mins. start to finish. I was a little extra cautious when I did mine and disconnected the battery first. then about a dozen Phillips screws later and it's in and panels back in place.
One of the best mods I've ever done on my XJ. I have NEVER been a fan of idiot lights, because usually by the time one of those has turned on...it's too late, the Fit has hit the Shan. Especially since temp issues have plagued jeeps since the dawn of man, it's best to be able to keep a closer eye on things like that and oil pres. and even volts for the alternator.
I always thought it was goofy that they even had the base cluster as most of the XJs at least of that vintage actually had the sensors installed... temp, oil pres. etc.
Of course your odometer will be off most likely.... you can have it reset if you so choose to match your original one... me I just logged it in my big file I keep on all my vehicles... as I plan on driving my XJ until the wheels fall off so it didn't matter to me to pay to have that changed.

Yup, super easy job.

I found one on Ebay with similar miles.
There are youtube videos on how to do the swap, which is about as basic as it gets.

Mileage stays with the unit, not the vehicle.

So everything should be good, but the mileage. Which is why most try to find a cluster with similar mileage.

There are ways to reprogram it though, just takes some more work and might have to buy a programmer.
