....removed front wheels today to sand rust off rotors, when turning rotors by hand on drivers side, rotor "catches" a little at one point on the pads, does this mean my rotors are warped?

also, bump stop was a little crooked, went to straighten it and it just dropped off and crumbled in my hand like a week old biscuit....

[Begin rant] I bought a Cherokee because there were hundreds of owner reviews on MSN auto relating how dependible and reliable a vehicle this was...........yea, once you've replaced every part with a brand new one.

Everytime I go to fix one thing, I discover 2 more things that need attention, I din't buy this thing to spend all my weekends covered in grease and hurling obscenities at random Jeep parts that

1) Won't come apart

2) Won't go back together

3) WILL go back together, but I can't figure out how

4) Necessitate the purchase of a number of expensive tools to work on them

5) Require, at minimum, 2-3 trips to auto parts store to get all the right parts for the repair

6) Are covered in oil and grease, all of which wind up on my hands and clothes

How long before I put the key in the ignition and it just explodes?
[/end rant]

BTW, my original question is are my rotors warped?

Yes it could be the rotors are warped, they see alot of heat,if your rotors are not grooved do not be to concerned. The rest of your post,I find it to be fun,all the new shiny tools, grease, making things better, just love it,may sound sick to som,but not me. Then there are the ones that by new cars and have waranties. I own mine and repair them. I will admit i love putting on performance items rather than just repairing but it is all good, you will get a handle on it soon, and it will last.

Probably you have a 13 year old vehicle. And you have no clue how the PO took care of it.

Working on the Jeep will only help you to appreciate it more. Jeep is a great vehicle and will go for many miles will lil upkeep. But you always have the ones that were abused and weren't taken care of.

Good luck.

PS your rotors are prolly warped. Since you already there take them off and bring them to Advance they will measure them for you. And turn if able. Unless there warped lol.

Two things:

First, you have already found out that JEEP stands for Just Empty Every Pocket.
Second, that is why my misc accessories list "hours of profanity" before any actual parts installed. Your Jeep will be a reliable vehicle once you have all the tiny bugs worked out so don't get to frustrated and burn it. I paid $900 for mine and have invested way more than it will ever be worth but I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across country right now.

want a dependable vehicle get a new car, but even then there is no guarantee. mine has 250K on it under the manufacture put together engine and tranny. it has been thrown through more mud then an entire spa can use in a lifetime. It has been swamped twice(not the engine), it has be standing up on it's nose in a hole 12 foot deep, it has over heated, it has been to cali and back 5 times in two years, the grand canyon numerous long distance drives, and more road rock crawling, dirt flying, sand throwing fun and hell she even sat in my garage for two years then I fired her up one day and she took off like it was no tomorrow. Any vehicle needs maintenance and any driver in the world will tell you that after the miles get up there and especially for offroad vehicles that they will break, they will need work, but it is all minor stuff. Come on if all you are complaining about it bumpstops and warped rotors then you expect way to much. I have more stuff to do on mine then I can shack a stick at, but guess what she still holds up better then any other rig on the trail. So relax, take a deep breath, and jump in head first get your jeep fixed and go due what she was meant to do and then you'll appreciate your hard work even more!!!! and her!!!!

Good attitude, let us know how it all turns out. My first diy job was a head gasket on a 89 grand am,the dealer wanted $900,I asked for the procedure and did it myself,I do all my work now. Because it saves alot of money, that I do not have anyway.

hahaha, it's a Jeep thing, when you will have gone through all the little (and big) fixes, you will have learned all the stuff and will know exactly what it is when it happens again.
Rusted, crappy parts will give you an idea of what to do to improve them, and this is just the beginning of the build. Imagine how boring it would be if there was nothing to fix, it would just be another of millions of normal vehicles, your work on it makes it special and the Jeep reciprocates with the emotions that we experience.

Weekend projects, dirt, grease and busted knunkles are my favorite!

Love the Jeep. Best beater I have ever owned.

The way I see it, I didn't pay $28,000 for my Jeeps, so I can afford to put some of that savings back into them.

One of them is 17 years old, the other is 22. For their age, I think they are pretty good. Not too many *cars* I would trust at their age.

My problem is finding time to work on them. They didn't have much done to them before I got them. Just driven.

Well, just about everything I know about "cars" I learned from messing with my XJ. And even tho she's 17 years old, she has never left me stranded, & always made me proud: busted the top heater hose 6 blocks from home, but got me home; death wobble always within 5 miles of home ; drove around with 2 broken motor mounts before I figured it out & never dumped the motor ; shredding the serp belt, but never broke it; never overheated; tranny & motor run strong; completed a black rock garden with 1 wheel missing 4 lug-nuts; everything still works; drives 5 hours to the trails, wheels blues for 2 days, drives 5 hours back home like she never left; pulled out a Hummer; fights mud holes & wins; meets the trails head-on when a Rubie takes the bypass; face off with anyone in the parking lot; turns heads wherever she goes.

Jeep XJ: Gotta Love It!

Exactly... They are one of the most durable vehicles that I know of... The only other old cars I would trust are diesels...
