Ifinally finished! BUT slow crank, no start
OK guys I have a 98 xj 4.0 and I just got done puting the engine back together after replacing my head gasket. there is slow crank, new battery, all sensors and plugs back in same spot, ground strap on back of engine on tight. can figure out what the problem is. when i try to start it with the door open and dome light on, its automatically a slow crank, but when I shut the door, it cranks like its about to start and slows down and voltage drops to below 9. could it be the CPS? if so where is it and how do I check it. If not any ideas?

Just a shot in the dark here, I don't know if there is a ground bolted on the head of a jeep like there are on other brands, but you might make sure you have a good ground to the engine.

You may just have a starter going bad. Since you have a good battery, I would check the battery cables, connections and grounds. You could jump the starter and see if you get better cranking or not. You can remove the starter and clean the mounting pad for a good ground connection for the starter.
The CPS nor timing affect cranking power. Those would just not let the engine start.

Sounds like the starter to me.... if you have a new BATT and it's draining below 9v when you try and start it... then something is drawing way too much power.....
edit: or you have a bad connection on the starter.....?
