Default Ignition Key: Either won't return to release position or won't start

Hoping someone can give some good advice...

My ignition key is having some issues. I have already tried replacing the lock cylindar, so I know that's not the problem.

There are two scenarios my Jeepie likes to choose from at seemingly random intervals:

Either the key will start the car just fine, but not return to the point where I can remove the key.

OR

The car won't start (key moves to ignition position, but doesn't cause engine to start -- though it will allow the electrical system to engage), but the key will come out just fine.

I've been removing the whole lock assembly to disengage it from the crescent and flag shaped holes (what do these actually engage with?) whenever the key won't come out. This allows me to move the key to the point where I can remove it, but is relatively annoying.

To get it back on, I have to cycle the key through several differnt positions to get everything to jiggle into a place it likes in order to not drive with the assembly resting on my knee (which I got sick of promptly).

At this point, my next idea is to take apart the steering column to get to the parts that engage with the lock assembly, clean them, regrease them, and put them back together in the hopes that it's just gunky old parts being grumpy.

Anyone have a clue as to what part would cause this sticking and alternation between functioning in one way or the other?

It would be really nice to be able to both remove my key and start the Jeep with some relative consistency.

Thanks in advance!

I"d check the rod that connects the key cylinder to the actual ignition switch, which is located further down the column. Or possibly the switch itself, might be shot or just loose and sliding up and down the column.

Neutral safety switch on transmission might be the cause? NSS is expensive to have replaced but i have read that it can be reconditioned but for now this is the workaround. From time to time i have to hold the key in the starting position and pull the automatic shifter to neutral and the motor starts. perhaps for you the damaged neutral safety switch (sensor) is also causing the transmission to believe it is in drive position on the shifter.

Just so the OP doesn't go off on a tangent, her problem does not involve the NSS. The NSS is an electrical switch, not sensor, and she is having a mechanical problem with her key.

The position of the ignition switch on the steering column is adjustable and her symptoms could point to that or the rod as mentioned by Radi.

AFIK it is rare for the switch to just come loose without someone messing with it. It is not necessary to take the column apart to adjust the switch position (assuming the '96 is similar to the '93) but it's not a lot of fun to lie on one's back on the floorboards with feet up in the air while doing so.

Caveat I forgot to mention: my mechanics checked out the neutral safety switch and it's working a-ok.

I will replace the ignition switch and cross my fingers!

I'll let you guys know what happens! I love my Jeepie and hope it works out!
