Do you see that device bolted to the block above the oil pressure sensor in the second pic in the other set of pics...That is an Ignition Coil Capacitor. Found only on 2000 and 2001 XJ's 4.0's.
The dual Cat setup is 2000 California Emissions or 2001 50 States setup.
As you recall, the PCM part number you gave me was for a 2000 XJ, 4.0, AW4, California Emissions.
You have a 2000 XJ there bud.
You can use the '96 motor but you'll have to make an adaptor to hold the coil rail + install the OPD and CMP. Leave everything else in place.
Edit: If you can find the VIN on the dash, the 10th digit/letter from the left is the year.
97=V, 98=W, 99=X, 2000=Y, and 2001=Z

Don't trust the VIN's on the doors...you need to run the VIN on the dash, as that's most likely the one that the XJ was originally titled with. Doors can be replaced, the dash VIN would be much harder. I would run both VIN #'s, and figure out what's going on. Sounds fishy to me, your engine, ignition, exhaust, and PCM are definitely from a 00-01. Someone could easily swap out the doors, use the VIN # from that, and register it as a 98. Quite possible you have a stolen vehicle, or a body that was totaled by an insurance company, but still good enough to fix, and do the shell game with a title. Easier to sell a car with swapped doors and a fake title than selling a stolen or totaled one...regardless, I'd be looking CAREFULLY at all the VIN's on that shell...
I found a hidden VIN on my '99 when I was changing my motor. There's a decal on the lower frame that the radiator sits on. VIN there matches my dash VIN.

The reason I was concerned was he stated the title says it's a 98. That's clearly not the case. Great info with the VIN decoding, CCken. OP, I would have the numbers run anyways, your title is definitely wrong, and the whole situation is highly suspect IMHO. Did you just buy this from said kid?

Maybe if he looks into it too far he may not like what he finds, besides the Sheriff may come knocking on his door.
My Mother always told me "What the eye doesn't see doesn't grieve the heart." Leave well enough alone?
Maybe the OP should just install the '96 motor and pretend it's a '98 XJ (with a tricked out ignition system). He could always point at the head and say 'See, it's a 0630 head dummy'.

Well the vin on the dash matches what's on the title so I'm over worrying about the vin. The kid I bought it from, I very seriously that he would have gone through all that trouble. The jeep wasn't even titled in his name, it was in his moms name. I'm gonna get it titled in my name this week and not worry about it. What I know is that the body is in good shape, it's gonna get painted the same green as my 96 and it needs to run.
I talked this over with my little brother, he's saying I should get a reconditioned head from an 02 grand Cherokee, bolt that on the 96 block and should done at that point. Gonna also swap in my transmission, t-case, axles and lift into the 98 as well. Fix the little bit of rot the 98 does have, done.

What say you Ken? I really can't see this being a stolen vehicle, I've met the kid I bought it from a year prior to me buying it from him, and he was driving it. Said he had it a for a little better than a year before the engine blew.
And what is the 0630 head you speak of? I'm new to jeep and I'm trying to learn on the fly.
I've learned that a 0331 head is bad, but the 0331 TUPY is the one that corrected the 0331 head cracking issues. Am I right?

Not saying the kid was trying to screw you either, but the party they bought the car from may have screwed them, and they never realized it, and passed it onto you, although that now appears to not be the case...just trying to look out for ya, kinda weird situation. Good luck in your endeavors!

Amen. Ken hit it on the head with what you need to do. Also the 0630 head is just a different casting.

What is the ODP and CMP that Ken mentioned?
Also, found this:
http://m.ebay.com/itm/171841383284?_mwBanner=1
Figure put that on my 96 block. The engine that is in the 98, have no clue how many miles are on it, odometer is the 98 say 158xxx but the engine blew a hole in the side of the block so I don't know if it damaged the head. I'd much rather not take a chance of finding some problem while going through the swap work. Rather it be done and up running at once.

Oil Pump Drive and Camshaft Position Sensor. The CMP is mounted on top of the OPD (seen in the second pic of the first set).
I just can't get over all the work that went into that engine swap...sorry ***** dual cat exhaust and all.
I'm still suspicious. If you pull the grill you can see that decal I mentioned.
OP, it will be an expensive swap you'll be doing.

How so as far as expensive?
And as far the ODP and CMP, can you explain more please? I thought it was just pull the distributor, put the cam sensor in its place, done. Am I wrong?
If I get that head I posted, will it work on my 96 block? Says it covers 0630, 7120 and 0331. So that should be good?

Its a straight swap
unplug all the electronic bits (sensors, ignition, etc) you need these for the computer
remove bad engine and the exhaust, but hold onto the intake manifold
install other engine and exhaust, with the new-style intake
reconnect all your bits
you might have some trouble mounting the coil rail to the old-style engine. Some people just fabricate brackets. Another option is to use a Dodge Viper coil pack setup and mount it off to the side, see here

Ehall, I posted a link for a new head to do this, has the threaded holes for the coil rail. So as long as what I posted will work, the bracket problem is taken care of.
As far as swapping, I take out the distributor and put the cam position sensor (this guy)
In the distributor's place and I'm good? This will drive the oil pump?
