Default Inner Shift Boot

I've googled, searched ebay, and searched these forums, but I still cannot find a single source for the inner shifter boot for my 95 XJ. Can anyone send me in the right direction? I'm tired of the hot air and oil smell when the windows are open!!!

Part #3

I think... My brain is a little fuzzy on the inner shift boot.. I was just happy that the new clutch worked..

If there is another one I haven't found it yet, but if I do, I'll post a link.

I think #3 is more of a transmission shifter seal. I'm looking for #68, the one that bolts to the body with a metal frame. (of course it's only available for the YJ on any exploded view I can find)

Update:

Went to the junkyard, searched through about 35 cherokees before I found one that was still good. The manager on duty said that the jeep would have to be put on a rack to get it out and that he'd take care of it next week. Called back, said he was too busy so I started taking mine apart to see what was involved. There is another plate screwed onto the body, and once you take that off you can get to the four bolts that hold it on to the transmission. Drove an hour back to the junkyard, pulled it out, only to find out that a different manager who was working that day wouldn't sell it to me because it was part of a good transmission regardless of what I was told previously. I see his point, but that's bad business. Also realized on the way home that I still had the bolts in my toolbox... So here I sit, bootless still. Does anyone know if the shifter lever itself comes apart? It seams to be pressed together and I can't see any way to get that secondary boot on otherwise.

Im confused as to how he thought it was part of the tranny... I always thought that boot was to keep air out... If you took it out, would you be exposing any vital parts?

You could always take a bike inner tube and cut it up and make one. Use hose clamps or zip ties to hold it on place.

The shifter will come out. It's nothing more then pressing down on a ring and turning counter clockwise, then you can remove the shifter, boots and all. The FSM says to do it from under the vehicle and reaching up to the top of the transmission. I had a bad boot when I replaced my clutch so I did it from the drivers seat. From there you could take off the shift **** and remove/install the boots.

There HAS to be a solution to this that is easy to fix and will not look like a 3rd. graders art project...

I just got done doing this today. It takes some trial and error but if you have an old flat inner tube lying around, or a couple of them, and some rubber cement. It works pretty well

I used the top section of a 2 ltr bottle for a kind of mold while working helped out pretty well.

It got dark so I have yet to bolt it down but it seems like its going to do the trick. I also need to buy some self tapping screws and zip ties to finish up.

But yeah, if you have a few hours to kill and don't want to spend much money it works.

Looks like I'll be going the innertube route as well Although I'd rather overpay for something that I didn't have to worry about falling apart. I can't say I trust rubber cement all that much...

I see how to get the bottom part of the shift lever out, but then you'd still have to find a way to get the boot over the retaining ring. Is there a way to split the shifter in the middle at the square fitting?

I'm still in disbelief that nobody makes a replacement for something that is an obvious issue to most manual shift Xjs... I guess it's because of how much of a pain it is to swap it out, maybe I'm a little more OCD than most people

lol. My shift **** is jb welded on from the previous owner. So I just kept tugging and pulling until the old broken rotted out part of the inner shift boot came up over the outer shift boot. Kinda have to fold the outer shift boot up around itself It takes some wrestling but it worked. Leave a slit in the side of the boot you made so you can slide it down over the **** and boot. Once you have it in place cement the last little section closed.

Hope I didn't make that too confusing. I should have taken some pictures and done a "write up" while I was making it.

Finally got my shifter boot sorted out...

With that, the floor pans, water leak, and exhaust repaired, I can actually start on my offroad project.

Here's the write-up including the parts:
