What do I need to do?

It reads 0, and then randomly decides to work.

Banging on the dash, or hitting a pot hole don't have any effect.

This happened on my brothers xj. Check the wires leading to the electronic speedo sensor on the tcase output. One came loose, we pushed it in, taped the wires up to the sensor, been fine since. His was more spastic though, would jump all over the place from 0-past 100. My gauges used to shut down, and then randomly come back to life with accurate readings, if that happens try to hit the trip button on the guage cluster a few times. worked for me anyways, good luck!

It's a 91. The trip meter crapped out a couple years ago. I'll give it a try.
