Intermittent voltage gauge

Intermittent voltage gauge
I have an intermittent voltage gauge. Some days it stays off, other days it comes on. I have no battery drain, and an external voltage meter shows the battery is always topped off and the alternator is charging.
1998 Cherokee 4.0 - forgot to mention - it's an idiot light, not a real gauge. I've been thinking about switching out the cluster to get all real gauges.
Any thoughts?
