Issues after Transmission rebuild
Hi everyone,
I've been loving this forum for a while now, finally I'm posting something.
I bought a 4.0 XJ from 1997 about a year ago. 4x4 Cherokee Sport 6 cylinders.
Had some small issues here and there, I replaced the radiator last summer, and since it was running great. Then a check engine light came up, the solenoid B seemed to the problem, changed that, didn't solve the issue.
So I went ahead, and had a transmission rebuild. Just got the xj back yesterday, and I noticed many newly added issues.
- Loud engine noise both when idle and revving (noise comes from the front, not under or the back - doesn't seem a muffler issue) - P doesn't hold the car still, if on an incline it rolls - Sometimes doesn't have power when starting from a stop. Seems like it's stalling or not in gear. Release gas and press it back and it goes. - Turn signals (both) sometimes get stuck (not blinking, steady ON)
I'll definitely take it back to the shop where I had the rebuild done, but I just wanted to have some opinions on what could be causing those things.

I agree that the turn signal issue probably isn't related. But you definitely have a few things on your punchlist that need to be diagnosed and resolved.
So you had none of these issues before you had the transmission rebuilt? That is an important item that needs to be communicated. I'd start for sure with your transmission rebuilder as you have some type of warranty with them. But the hook here is that this transmission shop may OR may not be the best at overall vehicle troubleshooting to get under those issues, some of which can be introduced with a major repair like a transmission.
Good luck and keep us updated!

Thank you all for the responses. To clarify, those issues I listed are all new, following the tranny rebuild. I agree the turn signal seems totally unrelated, and it's definitely a minor fix, just random it happened right after I picked up the car from the shop.
I do have a warranty on this, so next week I'll head back there. Definitely more work needs to be done, no doubts about that.

Well, for starters getting a code for a bad solenoid probably didn't require a rebuild. That's the computer saying that it thinks the solenoid is either open circuit or shorted. Since you changed the solenoid, I would have inspected the wiring very carefully and then tried swapping the trans computer out first.
Not engaging the park pawl and seeming to not be in gear could be as simple as adjusting the shifter cable. Did they maybe get the trans cooler lines up against the harmonic balancer up front?

Unfortunately for now my technical knowledge is too limited... I'm excited to learn about those things, but at the moment I wouldn't really know how to check on those things you mentioned @lawsoncl
I really appreciate you brought that up, and I'll mention it to the transmission guy who did the work, next week when I'll bring the XJ back to the shop. Hopefully it's just an easy fix, you somehow gave me hope it might not be too bad.
