Default Jasper Vs PowerTorque ReManufactured 4.0's

Does anyone have any opinions/knowledge/experiences with either Jasper or PowerTorque re-manufactured engines? Performance, warranties, is it even worth it to replace the engine?

Because I unfortunately had a death in the family today- my 2000 Sport's past owner blew the head gasket and enough coolant leaked into the oil to wreck the bearings. I've done what I can to help increase oil pressure (sending unit, thicker oil, etc) but today on the highway @2,000 rpm it went to 0 psi. Pulled over, no leaks anywhere, dipstick looked fine, so I had to tow it to a shop nearby that does Jasper engine swaps. I still have an employee discount at O'Reilly's, so I am wondering if I should go Jasper or PT. I imagine PT might be cheaper, but the Jasper seems to be more popular and has a better warranty. Trying to find a low mileage 4.0L in good condition may take too long, since I will be bothering co-workers for carpools for the next few weeks I imagine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve installed hundreds if not thousands of Jasper remanufcatured engines ... and I personally wouldn’t own something they put together whatsoever . You’d be miles ahead to find a good used engine even if you had to pull it from another XJ. Jasper does things on a routine basis that I wouldn’t do to my worst enemies engine . I’ve never seen one quality part come from power torque and for that reason I would assume any engine they sell is the same .

Between the two I would pick Jasper, but I don't have any experience with the Power Torque reman engines so I can't say much about. I know several people who have put Jasper engines in different vehicles and they have done good. Either one is to expensive for me when there is a lot of used low mileage 4.0s out there that can be had for cheap.

No experience with the 4.0, but I bought a WJ from a neighbor who had just paid to have installed a Jasper 4.7 reman engine (to the tune of $7K, she gave me the receipt - ouch...). Anyway, I then put 80k miles on that engine before I sold the Jeep. The engine was flawless - zero leaks, good power, ran smooth. Not sure if that helps. For every good story like mine, there may be a bad story, but no way to find good data.

^^^^ Same experience with a Jasper in our '96 Blazer. Our 3yr/100,000mi warranty recently expired. All is GOOD.

Make sure you have it installed by someone you FULLY TRUST. Upon start-up my friend who owns the shop heard a very slight noise in the motor. Called Jasper and they had him run a few tests. Sent another motor out that day. In some way Jasper compensated him for his trouble.

Have you called around to any local Machine/Engine shops to inquire about having them rebuild the engine you have now? I used to work at one and I would trust that place far more than a mass production rebuild engine.

I would just get one from a junk yard and call it good.

I also asked this question about 2 weeks ago since my 2000 overheated on highway and found things to be less than desirable.

I’ve had experience with jasper with engines other than the 4.0. Never had a problem, but expensive.

I just recently bought a 4.0 long block from rockauto, the cheapest one, $1590 + $300 core. I’ve had it in and running for about 3 days now. No problems so far, feels strong, quality was good. Being that I also have a 2000, the engine came with another 0331 head. I opted this route due to time concerns and the fact that the block had a decent crack in it and could not be rebuilt or welded. So when the time comes, I’ll do another head some years down the road.

some other options are:

get a loaded short block and a Clearwater head and build that.

Get a working used long block

a long block from the junker and rebuild that

grab a short block from the junker, rebuild it, slap on a clear water head.

If the car is worth it to you spend the money, if not just buy the cheapest crap and make it work.

Yeah I went looking at their site and for the long blocks, that isn't a bad deal at all.

If my motor ever goes south again I'll look them up.
