Jeep not starting

Replace the pins inside the connector going to the coil. If you check for continuity in the connector, you will get it, but if the pins are loose inside, they can give you problems. They are easy to obtain and replace. Hope this is a cheap fix.

You can, but if there's already power there it isn't likely the problem. Check the (-) side of the coil while cranking the engine. Should swing between +12V and ground, your DVM should read somewhere in between. (the PCM pulls it to ground every time it wants the coil to fire) If it's stuck at +12V the ignition system isn't triggering the coil to fire.

so if this is the case it needs a new switch? or possibly ECU? pretty much everything i could need, i have. I have a running cherokee that is a parts vehicle so i am completely open for ideas.

Here's a collection of wiring diagrams for the 88:
http://jeepgarage.free.fr/OWN/wiring%20diagrams.pdf
Scroll down to the "Computer Engine Control" drawing. You'll see an ignition module. That module is signaled (on the Orange wire) by the PCM to fire the coil. That signal is available on pin 9 of the diagnostic connector.
I'd start by checking there for presence of a trigger signal while cranking- try an AC volts scale capable of reading a 12 volt or so signal. Also verify +12V on the yellow wire to the module, and good ground at the Black wire.
If there is a trigger signal, the power and ground to the module are all good, and you have power to the coil but still no spark, swap the ignition module.
If there is NO trigger signal, try swapping the ECU.
If you see +12V at the (-) coil terminal, then the (+) coil terminal is making a good connection. The (+) terminal is the only way that +12V can get there.
