Default Jeep Smell

I hopped out of the XJ today after some playing in the snow and the jeep had a very strong rubber-ish burning smell. I wasnt spinning the tires or beating on it any more than usual.

I feel like every now and then I smell it.

I checked the brakes, and they arent dragging, the belt tension seems fine, no odd squeals or noises.

Everything seems fine other than the smell

Anyone have any ideas? maybe its just what a jeep fart smells like

you could be smelling roasted clutch depending on how you drive, mine leaks a lil oil and I always can smell a little burning oil after a longish drive

Dont think its a clutch.

I suppose if something catches fire, or breaks, then I will find out

mine doesn't start leaking till the motor warms up, and it stops leaking once it's cold, I've got the pretty common 4.0 rear main seal oil leak

Mine has the same leak and smell after she warms up. Real noticeable when I park in the garage.

Mine doesent have any leaks that drip.

Last night when I got home I noticed the smell again, and walked around the jeep for a minute sniffing it. Thankfully my neighbors already think I am odd.

The smell is definatly coming from the rear of the jeep. I lifted the rear wheels off the ground last week and they rotate freely without any drag from the brakes.

I have a rubber smell most times after driving from work. I (hope) think it is my oversize tires burning up on the road.

Do you have shock boots? If so, you may be smelling the rear passenger one burning due to the heat coming from the exhaust. I had the same smell for about 2 weeks and couldn't figure it out then one day I'm changing the oil and see a tennis ball size hole in tht boot where the rubber was melted away.

Its possible that the headlight switch or the ignition switch is starting to go (2 things that are always going on XJ's) When both of mine went I smelled "Rubber" (coating on wires) burning...Tj
