If you do the V10, I'd love to hear about it! If you can send me your notebook on the swap (and your pix,) I'll even convert that into a decent writeup for you...

One of these days, I want to take XJ bodies and do things like:
- 488/515ci LA-Block V10
- 426ci RB-block Hemi
- Cummins 4BT (maybe - height can be an issue...)
- Volkswagen 1500cc "flat four" (road rig only, methinks)

And other oddball swaps like that.

Ya, right now it's all research at this point.

I'll have the 2 door here before the end of the weekend.

From just base #'s the V10 is 4" longer than a 360 and 2" shorter than a I6. Width I know will fit cause it's no wider than a 360. As for fire wall clearance, not a issue cause I'll cut and rebuild if need be.

This in no stretch isn't going to be a fast build. I'm approaching it as if this is the only Jeep I'll ever build again. Once I get the XJ here I'll get some base pics taken and start a build/brain storm thread. I might even look into ordering 1 of those plastic dumby engines for mock up..

Any how sorry for thread jacking....

GM 5.3L fits nicely. Iron block and Aluminum heads weighs 10 lbs more than a stock 4.0L

More power than a stock 350 as well.

To build a 4.0 stroker RIGHT, even using J-yard parts and finding deals, You will have at least 2k in the build. You can buy a perfectly good wrecked silveraldo.. for around that at a salvage auction.

Also if you are going to go through alll the work of putting a big engine and caging it.. might as well build a truggy or a buggy. That is where I am at.

=Can you do a swap like this in California where you live with Smog Laws?
Yes he can. But he will need to swap the tranny that came behind the donor engine. So forget the AX15. It has to go before the Referee and has to be just like the stock vehicle only inside a Jeep. It ends up being a lot of work. Just ask me, I know.

Yea, even if the stroker costs $2000 in parts you'd be a ton of headaches ahead by going that route. The Smog Police are watching.

That's what I was thinking. But at least it had to have been searched for.

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a factory 318, less than 100,000 miles with a hole in the side of block,I don't think the 318 Dodge will hold up to serious trail work, more a low rpm grocery getter, decent torque but not worthy of high stress conditions, check out my 460 H/P balanced and blueprinted 383" Chevy conversion, would be a very easy conversion starting out with the I-6 motor configured donor Jeep, if you use the up-dated 700r4 transmission and 231 blazer transfer case and adapter make it almost easy, LOL, Chevokeeman.

Or the np241 from the 88+ z71's ... bolt right up to the 700r4's from the same trucks... better to just buy a z71 and take it all... lol

X2 the 318 only has 40 more hp and 75 more ft lbs than the 4.0. You can get those numbers out of your stock staight 6 without changing your internals. I've been researching the bajesus out of doing a v8 swap and every time i end up coming back to just building the 4.0. I finally decided on stock 4.2 internals so i can keep the machine shop work to a minimum. (just going to have the block dipped and the head done) you do that with a high flow exhaust and upgrade to the 99+ intake, you would have more power than the 318 and its an effortless swap done on a saturday afternoon.
