You are looking for reliable transportation but realize this is a 18 year old vehicle you are looking at. However, if as you say, you want to learn about jeeps, you will. My 91 XJ taught me a lot. Looks good in pic, don't know your location but check for rust...rocker panels, rear wheel wells, floor under driver and passenger feet. There is no vehicle out there with more tech and parts support than a jeep. If you don't mind working on your own vehicle, go for it.

I have 340.000+ on my 88 laredo
Does not burn oil, just leaks it.

It may be your oil sending unit... costs twice as much as a rear main seal, but so much easier to replace!!!! Usually, the gauge is affected by this.

What would the gauge usually do if this is the case?

with mine, it made the gauge seem inoperable... it was facing south for a while.. in the straight 4.0, the sending unit is on the passenger side, and accessible from the top. You should be able to take a rag.. clean the unit, and while it's running, you can feel it leak oil... slow, but steady.

Got 377k on my 94, so its got some life left if it has been/will be maintained well.

I have nothing useful to add except ... Wow, a Neon to a Jeep Cherokee. Congratulations!! Excellent move. The Jeep looks good.

I would offer 2k max for that one. Too old to sell for over that.
