Get a Wix or Mopar filter. Install it. See what happens.

You said it "sounds like a tractor". Does that mean your exhaust is loud or that your engine sounds like a diesel? What year is your cherokee? Is it a Renix? Might they have knocked-off or broken that exhaust heat riser tube that crosses under the engine?

You mean EGR tube? That's on the opposite side of the engine from the oil filter and tucked up where you could hardly see it.

I vaguely remember repairing the thing I described on my sister's Cherokee a long, long time ago. It was a "Pioneer" model from the early mid '80's with a 4-holer. It was loud until I repaired that corroded tube. The tube ran from the manifold, down one side of the block, crossed underneath and then joined another thing on the opposite side of the block. Was that an EGR tube?

I have just the opposite experience. Granted, its not jiffy lube, but its a local, quick-change station. I get my oil done from them every other year or so just because its mid-winter, I got too lazy that fall and didnt do it, now its January and I dont want to do an oil change in -20 degrees.
Changing your oil is REALLY simple and EVERY able-bodied vehicle owner should learn how to do it and ALWAYS do it themselves. I change mine every spring and fall. I use a wix filter & GTX synthetic oil and it usually costs me about $30 bucks. NO REASON to not do it yourself really. You know what youre using, you can inspect stuff while youre under there, grease everything, etc. I REALLY dont trust anyone with my Jeep because I want her to last, so I do all the work myself. I know thats not feasible for everyone, but an oil change takes all of 30 minutes on a day off. $30 bucks and 30 minutes every 6 months for piece of mind is a pretty good return.

Is it possible for any business to stay in business as long as Jiffy Lube has been in business and continue to do crappy work/service on a routine basis over the years on millions of vehicles?????? Are businesses always perfect?.....no, but if they are always bad, then what moron continues to give them business? Everybody has, at one time or another, had a bad experience with whatever business. Think about it.
There's an old businessman's proverb....."if I did something wrong, please tell me...if I did something right, tell others".
.....and yes, the stock OE filter is smaller (shorter) than lots of other non-OE oil filters (that will screw on)......sounds like the quickie lube used a oil filter that met stock OE size filter but the PO had installed a longer (than stock OE) filter.
Again, don't rule out PO neglect/abuse. What's neglect/abuse and what sounds like a tractor are very subjective.
Get a XJ FSM and start reading......the XJ is one of the easiest vehicles out there to "learn how cars work and what it takes to keep them working". Otherwise, just keep making car payments forever on vehicles that are covered by factory warranty.
