Is it possible for any business to stay in business as long as Jiffy Lube has been in business and continue to do crappy work/service on a routine basis over the years on millions of vehicles?????? Are businesses always perfect?.....no, but if they are always bad, then what moron continues to give them business? Everybody has, at one time or another, had a bad experience with whatever business. Think about it.

There's an old businessman's proverb....."if I did something wrong, please tell me...if I did something right, tell others".

.....and yes, the stock OE filter is smaller (shorter) than lots of other non-OE oil filters (that will screw on)......sounds like the quickie lube used a oil filter that met stock OE size filter but the PO had installed a longer (than stock OE) filter.

Again, don't rule out PO neglect/abuse. What's neglect/abuse and what sounds like a tractor are very subjective.

Get a XJ FSM and start reading......the XJ is one of the easiest vehicles out there to "learn how cars work and what it takes to keep them working". Otherwise, just keep making car payments forever on vehicles that are covered by factory warranty.
Thumb's up

That's a very good point. I didn't pick up the fact that this is the new owner's first oil change since purchase.

Some sellers out there unfamiliar with 4.0 quirks think the common lifter noise and/or piston slap means impending doom. Some are honest, others load it up on Lucas and stiff oil to shut it up hoping to quickly foist it on the next cash-paying buyer.
Lord knows what was drained out of the sump.

So, Mr. Original Poster, have you tried putting on a new oil filter yet?

Jiffy, like most others - will garantee in writing that they will screw something up!

Hiring requirement - IQ over 6 but not over 10.

Jiffy Lube uses Mileguard oil filters made by fram (do not use!!) The fram number is ph16. the mileguard number is a mo16. Fram changed the design of the ph/mo16 oil filter to be smaller about 2 months ago, (they did it to a few popular oil filters). So the new mo16 is alot shorter compared to the old design. You can use a ph/mo8a filter (oversized). Fram/mileguard filters suck for oil pressure though.

I don't use them just because of all the problems ive seen (and heard). Whenever i use fram, the oil pressure isnt as consistent as it usually is... I wouldnt say run out there and switch it right away (unless there is a problem of coarse), but maybe use a purilator L30001 for your next oil change. it is larger with more filter element inside. I use the gold one.

Me and my dad usualy use purilator, only reason i used these Frams is the PO gave me 2 of them, and just changed the oil before he sold it to me using a fram. I should be able to replace the filter without draining the oil, right? Since it mounts somewhat upside down.
