So I tried to post a reply back on page one but it didn't work. Might have saved pages of this and that.
Anyways I went to majestic lube and got them to replace the oil filter with one of the proper size for free! Still makes the lifter sounds. I will get tools eventually and do everything myself. I couldn't check diffs and lube, even if I could change the oil. I have worked on cars before. I have a saab 9-5 5spd. Talk about some difficult repairs. I had to sell all my tools
Thank you all for the info! I learned a lot from all of you.
I will post pix and keep up with the forums here.

Btw, red 1996 cherokee sport 2dr 5spd!
198,888 miles.
Still runs and looks like new. An 80yr.old friend of a friend had it and maintained/drive it well.
Also... It is growing on me I may even sell the saab to fix up the Jeep a little.

A bit of lifter noise wouldn't surprise me one bit. It's very common, particularly when the miles start rolling up.

I agree. However it did sound perfect when I brought it in. then it was like it showed it's age over night.

This is exiting. I feel myself becoming, "dare I say it?" A Jeep fan.

Was this the first oil change since you got it? Any chance the prev.owner ran heavy weight oil, Lucas, something like that?

Yes, first oil change after one month or so of ownership. I asked but he couldn't remember.
It was brown and there wasn't a sticker in the window, so...

It isn't uncommon to run 15/40 (Rotella, Delo) in older 4.0's. If you switched back to 5/30 or 10/30 you might hear a bit more noise, depending.

Been running Fram filters for 30 yrs and never had a oil related failure on any of my engines, (maybe just luck). Oil changes every 3-5 thousand miles. This ads up to a hell of a lot of miles.

Jiffy lube sucks!

30 years go by, and you would think the entire chain would fold from all the bad publicity.

But people just keep going there. For the record, I always have done my own oil changes since I started driving.

Ditto! The ones with grit covered ends for easy on/off.
