Junk Yard diving worth it? regear/seats
I was at the local salvage yard the other day and ran a cross 2 jeeps a 87 and a 89 (i think) cherokee that were 4x4 and 4 cyl. Now with my jeep being a 95 would the front gears be compatable? I dont think the rears were 8.25s back then so i guess they probably wont work. But the front should right? He only wants 50 bucks for the ring and pinions so i think if it will work ill do it. So for the rear i would probably go get a 8.8. but what gears do theyhave in then and would i have to regear it to match the fronts i get from the scrap yard? Also whats involved in putting front Grand Cherokee seats in a 95 cherokee?

Do you hear banjos?
4 cylinder engines USUALLY had 4.10 gears. Those years are more than likely a D35 in the rear, AKA, a step down from your 8.25, but would bolt into your XJ. The front gears would work, as all of the axles involved are HP D30s, but you would have to regear your 8.25, or swap in the D35 from the bone yard. Proper gear set up is not a cake walk, and is rather pricey when someone else does it. It's up to your pocketbook depth how far down this path you travel...

Were the 4 cylinder XJs auto or stick. That will have a bearing on the gear ratio. The front axle will be a high pinion Dana 30 which is what was put in the front of every XJ from 84 to 99. You will need to get the full carrier assembly and not just the ring gear and pinion gear. The carriers are different and will need to to swapped if going from 3.55 to 3.73 and up. Keep in mind that you will need to have them properly set up or they will be trashed in no time.

Im very mechanically inclined so doing it wont be a problem if i can find a good write up and the tools but i didnt know what gears they were. I dont think i would down grade to the d35 due to my heavy right foot. But the reason im wanting to do this is ive been on 35s with stock gears. 3.05s 0r 7s or something but have no issues with how it performs except for the fact that it wont hardly pull itself in 5th on the highway. Im also wanting to get atleast one Aussie locker but still need to keep cost down.

If was going that far (and I already am with mine which is why the axles are still in the garage), I would only buy the carrier and have 4.56 gears put in. Then you would really be able to feel it in the seat of your pants.

My thing is i want to regear but i dont go off road as much as i would like so i dont want to be revving at 4000 rpm going down the highway. Ill have to play around on randys ring and pinion and might just hold off on this little project until next tax return time...

Are the R&P already taken out of the carrier? If so, that's too bad. I would probably pass and buy the whole axle. Much easier swap than just the R&P. That is what I'm hoping to do this winter. An 8.8 swap would be ideal and can be found in a matching ratio as the front. Plus disc brakes!
