Just bought a XJ tires are loud! Need replacements!
About a month ago I purchased a 1996 cherokee sport that was owned by an elderly man. Therefore it is in flawless condition and I got it cheap. The only problem is he put new tires on it about 2 months so it would pass inspection before selling it to me. The tires he put on are Firestone FR380 tires. I have noticed that when I go above 65mph on the highway it is ridiculously loud. It gets louder the faster you go. I noticed the tires have a white stripe on them and the stripe is facing inward tward the body. I don't know if they are on backwards and this is making them loud? If I can't fix these tires I need to get new ones ASAP. What are the best all around tires to get as a replacement. I live in Pittsburgh and it is snowing like crazy right now and I want to get good on-road, off-road replacements. What do you recommend? thanks!

i had those exact same tires on my jeep when i bought it. they were GREAT tires for the road. and mine were quiet. very quiet.
Sounds to me like you have other problems than the tires.
are you sure it s not axle whine? did you check/replace all fluids?
and the white stripe can go in or out depending on your preference. they are non directional tread pattern

No, its not axle whine. It is a very deep roar sound that makes your ears numb. It is like an over exaggerated road noise as soon as you hit 65. fluids were all checked, I always monitor them.

check for exhaust leaks, that the doors are sealing, that the front wheel bearings and rear wheel bearings are good.
if you think it is tires. than any AT's would fit your needs for snow/onroad/off road traction yet they will be louder than the tires you have now.

I just checked all 4 tires, nothing looks out of the ordinary. I did notice when I bought the jeep that the steering is somewhat loose. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or if it is just how Jeeps are. It was just different to me because I came from a sports car with very tight steering.

Are all 4 tires the same size? When I purchased mine the po had different size tires on front. This made it whine real bad. New tires fixed it right up.
Good Luck!
