Ya I believe it is our responsibility to fix things as guys, God knows myself being a mechanic and married "30 YEARS,lol!" I have two daughters who drive, I have been fixing my own cars for years! "6 engine rebuilds on six different vehicles, I could not even count the tune ups and oil changes". But things are beginning to get better in that area, one daughter moved out and has had her own car for three years up until some moron pulled in front of her and totaled her 03 camry about three months ago.
So now my extra vehicle my xj I have been building is now in her hands for the next couple of months until she gets another car. The other daughter finally bought her own car and has the oil changed herself, and the wife well I just bought her a newer car and should not have to work on it oh maybe for another year or two, I am hoping, but that has been my life according to Steve.
Question: Why didnt your dad help you with your jeep, that is his responsibility, lol.

You should get a Manual at your local auto parts shop for your jeep. That way you have pictures and "troubleshooting" tips if you have problems like this in the future. Also, only listen to your friend with 5 jeeps. Don't just let any moron with a set of ********* touch your car. Most people would do something stupid like disconnect a spark plug wire and not notice. And yes that would make is run terribly. Also i took a 96 Jeep XJ to 350,000miles and only put 6qrts of 10w-30 (recommended by the manf.) and it ran just fine. When you start changing oils around and adding extra "crap" in the oil you risk doing some damage to your engine. so be consistent with your oil. Try and use whatever has been used in the past.

That is cool. I have been slowly telling my daughter who has my xj, how to work on the thing.
The other day I had to diagnose a poor running problem over the phone with her and made her look under the hood for loose vacuum lines, and slowly trace down each line until we came to the map sensor which the vacuum line had come off of it and made the xj die all the time.
She felt impowered to be able to do that and fix it, "thats not to say dear old dad diagnostic ability was tried."
It is realy hard to diagnose something over the phone or online, so what happened to you is good but rare that it does get fixed right, keep up the good work.

if the muffler is there then just go buy a tail pipe from an auto parts store and a 2.25 inch exhaust clamp and hang it up and clamp it on.
If the muffler is not there get one of those to and another clamp.
and you might need to trim things up so be prepared with a hacksaw or sawzall or exhaust pipe cutter.
I think last time I let a shop do my exhaust which was like 8 years ago it cost 150 to have a tail pipe bent and installed and a muffler installed(that I purchased elsewhere) im sure the cost has gone up some over the years.

yeah your exhaust prolly fell off after the cat. That happened to me one day and I had to walk back and get it on the side of the road haha. As far as catback exhausts go I would say the cheapest is probably off jegs.com or summitracing.com. Search for "dynomax exhaust" for a jeep cherokee. They have one thats pretty cheap and you can send in a rebate and get money back. At one point it was like 60 bucks for a brand new muffler and tail pipe including the rebate.

edit: Also noticed you are from CT! Soo Hi fellow CT jeeper! lol
