Yup, with mine, the shifter interlock does not disengage to let the ignition come back to the lock position. I have to finger f*ck the shifter to let the key out

Mine was doing it when I first bought it, the workaround till I got the cable was to either shift it to park quickly (with a bit of force) or push on the shift button while turning the key back.

It is more than likely your neutral safety switch. Nudge the shifter further toward park and you should hear a click. Then your key will come out with no issues. Give it a shot and report back.

Still more than likely the NSS. Search the forum for cleaning procedures, knock that out and let us know.

I don't think the NSS is your problem.. I don't know your year, make, model, but check this out..
http://www.justanswer.com/jeep/26h1n...interlock.html
Scroll down below the console removal procedure.. it shows how to adjust the shift interlock cable. Hope this helps

NSS isnt the problem the problem sounds like the button for when you disengage the button when you put it in park it doesnt think its park thus not letting you release the key try prying off the shift handle and see iff anythings binding down there

The link is to an issue with an 05 06 Liberty... This issue was occurring in my xj and was indeed the nss. Whenever the key didn't want to come out of the ignition I could gently nudge the shifter forward and out it would come. During this same time it would occasionally start only in neutral and have issues with the reverse lights as well. All classic symptoms of a dirty/failing nss.

Sorry I took so long bud...

Basically when you move the shifter into the "park" position, there is a little mechanism that shifts up (towards the handle). That is what locks the shifter into the park position and releases the ignition lock, to the "lock" position on the column which lets the key come out.

Now I DGAF because my jeep has an alarm with starter disable and my ignition is warn out enough that I got my key out and just keep it in my pocket lol

I am sure its a simple fix, you may just need to pull the console and lube everything up so it moves freely, cuz I'm sure if full of dirt and garbage

So when the key doesn't come out, does the shifter lock into the park position or can you pull it out of park without touching the release button?

I know this is an old thread but I had to bring it up in hopes that this guy is still around so I can inform him that he has no idea wtf he's talking about...
