Default key stuck in ignition

Hi All,
Helped our son buy his first vehicle. '94 Cherokee Sport. It came with a few issues but the engine is strong. The ignition won't turn back all the way so the key wont come out. Any ideas on what is going on & how to fix it?
Thanks,
John

Hi Johnny, Welcome to the forum. I used to watch your show when I was a kid. How is Haji?
Hopefully your issue is worn out or stuck tumblers in the ignition key cylinder. If you use the search function above, type in "'Jeep Cherokee Ignition Key Cylinder stuck" or something like that and you should get more information.
Good luck!
Matt

You've probably heard the phrase, "There's no such thing as a stupid question." Well I beg to differ. There are stupid questions but you'll never know until you ask.
That was Not a dumb question Nujeepguy. But we did try that with no success. Thanks though!
Matt, thanks for watching. Hadgi's good, busy with his harem. Dad's got Alzheimer's & Race is in an old spies home. Bandit, not so good.😁
Cylinder is what my 17yo kept thinking. I'm not sure to be proud or peeved he's probably right. I didn't think it was the cylinder. I let you know who's right. Thanks!
Johny

Several things to try. Can you remove the lock cylinder? the is a hole in the plastic part that goes around the steering column. insert a screw driver and you can release the cylinder lock. Try moving the steering wheel while trying to take the key out. lube the key. If you get the key out, try using newly cut keys.

In order to remove the ignition key cylinder, the key needs to be in the "run" position. Then you can try to clean the tumblers so that the cylinder moves without binding or buy a new one at any of the auto parts stores. If you buy a new one, you will have a new key for the ignition and the orginal key for the doors. However, Dorman has an instructional youtube video showing you how to set the tumblers to match your current key.

it's most likely the rod that runs along the top of the steering column.

first, try shifting it hard into park. it may not be pushing the rod up enough to release the key. it thinks it's not in park.

you can remove the plastic gauge bezel to gain access to the rod, you will feel a square metal block at the top of the rod. pull that towards you with your finger. this should get the rod back far enough to release the key.

good luck.

Default Ignition key stuck 89 Cherokee

Did anyone find a solution to this post? Key stuck in ignition.
I have similar problem, my key won't turn to the off position and therefore will not come out of the ignition. I've seen a few posts and videos that talk about adjusting the shift cable by adjusting the lock on the cable, but I don't see anything adjustable on my shift lever rods.

Refer to attached pic. This is on an 89 Cherokee with AW4 Transmission and NP242 transfer case.
