I took my cylinder out and took it to a lock smith, cost 8 bucks for them to go through it for me. This is a pretty common problem on our jeeps. It is really simple to take the cylinder out and put it back in , let me see if i can find my old links.

Just found my receipt, "rebuild tumblers" is what the locksmith had to do. No luck on the links yet though.

I recently did that to mine(check cylinder). It turned out that the release/lock in the shifter itself got stuck. I should have noticed when I was able to go through all the gears without having to hit the brake.

My problem was that the key wouldn't want to turn sometimes, had to wiggle it pretty aggressively. It eventually got to the point where i got stuck in a chipoltle parking lot for 15 minutes until i got it to turn. Thats when i decided to get it fixed. Only took the locksmith about 45 minutes to fix it for me.

no key needed....
Use it long enough, and you won't need a key anyway!
On 2 of my cherokees, parts would get so loose, that you could start those jeeps by just turning the ignition lock ring.....

i had a locksmith look at mine that did the same thing. All he did was take the wood handle from a hammer and tap the key towards the column a few times, and fixed it immediately. He said that it would probibly happen again, but it hasn't done it for over a month. Good luck
