Kick down issue.
So I'm having this issue with my 92 XJ. Has the AW4 in it. Driving across country from GA to CA I started having an issue around Texas with the transmission seeming like it wanted to kick down and get into OD. Over and over again this was and still is annoying as ****. I have already adjusted the TV cable on the road once and it seemed to do better for about 45min. Just adjusted it again while sitting at a Loves in Arizona. It seems to kick down more going down hill but also up hill (MORE than it should) if I hold my foot in a certain hard to find sweet spot on the gas pedal it will be fine and hold speed until I hit an incline or decline again. Again this is very annoying and I've been researching this issue for 2days now while making my way cross country. Open to helpful insight everyone! Thanks!

Where when you "put the pedal to the metal" the transmission like downshifts so you can haul ***. Simplest way I can think to put it...

How much does the Tach climb when it 'kicks down'? If it's about 300 RPM, that's likely the TCC unlocking. Check the brake pedal switch and the TPS.
If the RPM increase is larger than that you might be kicking back from 4th to 3rd. That's often a TPS issue too.
This presumes you are holding a steady speed on a flat road when the problem occurs. Anything else and some shifting is normal.

@Busted, I know this thanks. Please re read my post and maybe you will understand what I'm saying.
Otherwise, it will sudden increase of 1k RPMs and instantly drop back down over and over again unless I match the higher rpm increase by pushing the gas pedal down more but as soon as I level out the speed it does it again and again. I just replaced the TPS 2 days ago after it shorted out while I was driving.
Why the brake switch check?

I would look into why or how the TPS shorted out. That may be the cause of the problem. The brake light switch tells the computer to unlock the torque converter.

TPS shorted out due to an oil issue I had from blow by oil splattering it. That's been dealt with already. Brake switch isnt shorted out or anything either. Isn't stuck on or inop.
Have noticed that at the least my No. 4 injector is a bit touchy. If I turn it back and forth the engine bogs down or dies.
