Default Largest Tire in OEM spare holder

whats the largest tire you can fit inside the back of the XJ using the OEM spare tire mount and location?

Im running 33's and finally removed my OEM spare as its useless to me right now.

You can fit a 33" tire (i know you can a 32") but you have to move the back seal latches so it mounts a little more upright. it is a tight fit. And in my opinion not worth the loss in cargo area or loss in visibility. I would just lay it down flat....

I have a 30x9.50x15 secured there. Fits snuggly. I run 31's, but a 31" spare will not fit without modding the compartment.

Im looking for alternates to putting it on the roof.

You could always do a false floor and keep it under it. Another option is a rear tire carrier. They have the hitch type ones, you could go with the Detours Tailbone setup, or you could just fab your own. I've got the tailbone and love it, but if you want your own design, Mark (Detours) or many of the other guys on here could probably help you out in getting one made.

To my amazement, I am able to fit a BF Goodrich A/T 31x10.5/15 spare in the stock location with the stock plastic wingnut haha .

My spare is actually one of the tires I replaced on my XJ so it is probably worn down to 50% tread.

When I shut the hatch the tire just misses the rear window by a quarter inch or so, It's a really tight squeeze.

You shouldn't have any problem doing what I'm doing as long as you don't go larger than a 31 and you have an XJ that came stock with a full size P235/75/R15 spare. I have no clue if it will work for XJs with doughnut spares though.

I run my 31/10.5/15 as a spare and the only "Interior Modification" I did was put a couple marks in the metal headliner trim peice back there.

My 01 came with a donut spare. I don't know if earlier models have more room.
But to get a 31" tire to fit, I would have to at least trim the rear speaker grill, and move the rear seat forward.

i have a 235/75 back there. You could likely get a bigger one to fit - if you shifted it as far forward as possible, and it you don't have the rear speaker bar

I have a rear speaker bar but I moved it up so it is almost right behind the rear bench

My 92 has a doughnut and my 96 came with a full size p235/75/15 spare. I installed a speaker bar I got from the junkyard and put it almost directly behind the rear seat so I could actually hear the music. If you didn't have the speaker bar you probably wouldn't have a problem. Im guessing the rear bench on the 97+ was moved back a little for more leg room
