Probably a rear main seal. They leak on most jeeps. Also the heads often start to leak a little oil as well.

You just said the whole motor is covered with oil from a leaky valve cover gasket, replace the obvious first.

Replace known leak first, then get some purple power or similar and spray it down good with that and go to local car wash and try to get as much oil off as possible so you can see if its still leaking somewhere else. I had to dfo this to my 91 XJ, and most recently to my Toyota which by the way was leaking out of the oil filter, and had oil all the way to the rear diff.

Three very poplular jeep leaks: oil filter assembly (two o-rings, the torx bit is usually a pain to loosen), valve cover gasket (at the rear especially. DO NOT add anything when you put the new seal on and don't over-torque the cover bolts), and oil sending unit. Rear main seals get leak'n on any older/high milage vehicle.

I use dye and a black light to find my sources of leaks (oil, power steering, trans, etc). Both the dye and a small black light can be found on amazon. The dye will 'glow' under the black light. The dye method has saved me much time (and parts and money) than doing the old part throwing method.

Rear main seals aren't that bad. Just some work to get to it and to put it back together. Do a search here, there is a couple good posts on that job.

thats the amount of time it takes if your a mechanic and have done it before and don't run into any issues. You have to remove the whole tranny and transfer case to remove the rear main seal.

Only the oil pan needs to be removed, and then the rear bearing cap.

6-8 hours seems extreme. That might be what 'they' charge, but that charge is based on a standard set of billing prices.

Put on some good music, get the tools out, invite some buddies over, and you'll have it done before you realize it.
