Default Leave shackles in place

1999 XJ 4WD Upcountry

All,
I'm going to be replacing the rear springs and was wondering about just removing the rear of the old springs at the shackle and not removing the shackle at all. That would seem to simplify the job somewhat. Of course, if the bushing in the shackle is whacked, then the job is not going to turn out satisfactory.

For those who have changed out the rear springs, what did the bushings in the rear shackle look like? In retrospect, would you do the job this easier way or, alternatively, would you definitely change out the shackle (or at least change out the bushing)?

Other thoughts?

Thanks,
Larry

If the bushings are cracked and dry rotting then they need replaced. If you have the leaf packs out then you are literally 2 bolts away from changing the shackles.

Personally I wouldnt even consider not changing the shackles at the same time

shackles are relatively cheap. i would change them. match them with the leafs for the lift height you're after.

Yeah, but those are a tough two bolts.
I think they come from the factory Loctited.

I had to heat mine to get them to budge.
